Sappho's Little Boat

SAPPHO's LITTLE BOAT
Sappho's little boat sailed through a palm tree
there were coconuts everywhere
she made a lady crab climb
into the palm of her hand
she rubbed that palm across the hot sand
and looked away from the sea
to a place where the grass ended
and the ecstatic cottages began
and then she began writing poems
with her right hand like red wings
in the window glass
and with her left hand, she combed the sea
of its bare whitecaps
and made the shore birds cry

Summer Daisies

SUMMER DAISIES
If you could hear them --
how like the wind
how like the sea
how like the stars
that burn in empty heaven -
of god
Βursting with the seeds
out of the ground
like the lost children
of paradise,
raging with the sun --
in every flower
a world at war
with being and nothingness,
the endless daisy chain --
each flower same as last,
She loves me.
She loves me not.
so pretty
to us,
but going, crazy
like every daisy
every fucking daisy
that ever came before.
If flowers could talk
We would hate them.

A Rose May Sting A Bee

A ROSE MAY STING A BEE
I know a man who built a garden gate
(That)
Kept love out /Kept love out/ kept love out
I know a man who painted a house
(It made his heart)
Turn black/ Turn black/ turn black
I know a man who drove a hammer into the ground
(With)
Just one nail /Just one nail / just one nail
Another man who put a hat on (that)
Took his head (off)/ took his head / took his head
A rose may sting a bee but not the way that you or me
I know a man who built a garden gate
(That)
kept love out /Kept love out / kept love out
A man looks into your eyes when he tells you a lie
(Does not fear his)
Government /Government, / government
Another man who told the truth so hard
(It was not different)
from a lie /from a lie / from a lie
A rose may sting a bee but not the way that you or me

A TREE YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN
One morning you will look out your window
you see a tree you have never seen
a tree that never existed
a tree with bright feather leaves
or maybe no leaves at all
but hands or hair or eyes
like the fruit of many flowers
or like the voice of a God
I can't say exactly
I haven't seen your tree
I only know that one day
There will be a tree
A tree like that outside your window
A tree like that outside your window
a different tree
you never had expected
Not good or bad just unimaginable
One tree, then two, then a thousand trees
trees you have never seen
with birds in every branch
singing to themselves
but, not to you! Not to you!
Birds singing a song
You didn't even know could be sung

A Difficult Soldier

A DIFFICULT SOLDIER
He salutes the passing clouds
He takes orders from the wind
he wears a helmet from white daisies
He feeds the generals horse with beans
He even kissed the sergeant on the mouth
one time he shot a bunkbed full of holes
He worships a clay figurine
of an enormous penis
and when new hookers come to town
it's a religious holiday
no fighting allowed
He lets the air out of jeeps tires
He eats mud pies
he rides across the battlefield on a bicycle
He walks backwards to the front
He picks flowers on retreat
He applauds like a crazy boy at the circus
When he hears the sound of artillery,
he fires bullets into the sun
whenever he is ordered to kill,
whenever he is ordered to kill

Play Like it's Love

PLAY LIKE IT'S LOVE
give me your hand
why is it so hard
for you to smile
like love never stopped
play like it's love
play like it's new
play like it's love
play like it's new
no one here to say
so stay yes please stay
now is the time
night does go slow
play like it's love
play like it's new
play like it's love
play like it;s new
give me your hand
why is it so hard
for you to smile
like love never stopped

Green River

GREEN RIVER
I'm not here tonight
folding white pillowcases
by a window in a room
with a teapot boiling
A river runs out of them
A green river without banks
Which is a green shallow sea
sleek with many fishes
Sailing to where a sun should be
Sailing to where you have gone
Sailing to where you have gone
Snow falling on roof shingles
waving this flag of heartbreak
I open my eyes
A river runs out of them
A green river without banks
That skim and ripple
A green river
with promethean waves
and a set of tiny white sails
